Banshee's iPod support went through some big changes between 1.6 and 1.8, so it "music shows up as video" is probably the more relevant problem here.  It sounds like you might be running into this issue: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631046

On that bug report, comments 3 and 8 both mention that music is showing up in the video section of the iPod.  If you want to stay up-to-date with that issue (and possibly provide more information if/when it's needed), you can create a bugzilla account if you don't already have one and add yourself to the CC list.
