How do I get banshee to work with the latest libgpod (7.9.X)? Or do you
mean I would need to use a libgpod based player like rhythmbox?

libgpod does support it. The problem is banshee isn't working with
libgpod. But until then you can use the new libgpod, only requirement:
you must initialise the ipod with a working itunes once. (Like
uploading a song)
