[Banshee-List] Playing videos in banshee 1.7.4

I've come to adore Banshee in the last few months and recently took its video/movie management out for a spin. On attempting to play some films I'm greeted by an error message asking to install multimedia plugins. Assuming banshee uses gstreamer I've taken the liberty of installing g-streamer and all things that are good, bad, and ugly. Currently I'm having issues the xvid codec with .avi as a container. For some films banshee is also searching for an H.264 decoder. Something called x264 is installed through the software center. I'd appreciate any assistance someone can provide in getting these films to play, or maybe suggest a package to install that are not good, bad or ugly gstreamer ones :)
