In fact, the settings in the .is_audio_player are merged with the default
configuration in Banshee, so you only have to add key in your
.is_audio_player for values which you want to change. (just for your
information)

The correct key to specify the supported codecs is 'output_formats'. So if
you change 'playback_mime_types' to 'output_formats' in your
.is_audio_player is should work fine.
I have the following in my .is_audio_player on my N900:
name=N900_internal_memory
audio_folders=Music/
output_formats/application/ogg, audio/mpg
This changes the name of the device in Banshee, makes Banshee store the
audio in Music/ instead of .sounds/ and adds ogg support (this list is
merged with the default list in Banshee so the other codecs don't need to
be added here)
