What backend service does SoundJuicer use? I haven't tried using it.

I wonder if it is a musicbrainz vs. cddb thing? I have had mixed
success ripping cd's using banshee. It is basically hit or miss when
trying to import them; often there is an issue with finding the data
on the musicbrainz server, or the server times out.

Both use musicbrainz

I've had much better luck ripping with ripperX, which is simple to
use, and everything gets queried and results returned with cddb, no
issues getting the metadata on the CDs I've tried so far.

Aside a few cds (pretty much everyone of them with copyprotection) Banshee has always served me well.
