If you're writing your other means in C#, you can use Banshee.CollectionIndexer.dll. Here's a small sample implementation.

For a more complete implementation, you can use the GNOME Do banshee plugin (bzr lp:do-plugins) or the (new and unreleased) Tangerine banshee plugin (lp:tangerine).
