I have noticed this as well. About a year ago during a demo of the Podcast plugin on the MIT campus download speeds leveled out at about 1.5 MB/s. Someone asked if there was a bug in the speed calculator, there wasn't.
Flash forward to the Mono 2.x series and you have about a ~50-90% performance decrease.

start screaming again...
