I should have mentioned:

a) You *must* install in the SAME prefix as HAL (probably /usr) - this
is because HAL expects the FDI file to be in the same prefix
b) make uninstall will completely revert everything
c) Installing PodSleuth does NOT conflict with libipoddevice nor harm
HAL in any way

So with (c) in mind, it shouldn't harm anything at all. Installation of
the HAL bits is fully compliant with how third party add-ins should be
installed, thus it doesn't really affect HAL. If something goes wrong
inside PodSleuth it will not hurt or bring down your HAL. In fact, only
one file is added to HAL:

$(datadir)/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/20-podsleuth.fdi

Where $(datadir) is probably /usr/share.

That said, use at your own risk :)
