It's not horribly complex, however odds are that the delay you're
talking about is fixed.  v0.11.3 which was just released on Dec 9th has
some major performance enhancements particularly with switching source
views.  You didn't specify a version, but I'm willing to bed that
upgrading to 0.11.3 will fix your delays :)

However, if you are looking for developer experience, I'm sure you can
find something to do around the Banshee community.  Most of the code is
written in C#, so you'd need to know/learn it.  There are plenty of
places where developers could get involved...we've always got a small
queue of patches waiting in bugzilla as well as quite a few bugs that
are waiting to be triaged.  Also, a great way to learn to code things
for Banshee is in plugins - we have a handful of plugins that could
certainly use some love and perhaps a regular maintainer.  There's also
plenty of feature requests on the wiki that could be implemented as
plugins or as patches to the core.  I started working on Banshee writing
plugins and have been hooked since :)
