[Banshee-devel-list] Clementine vs Banshee

Hey David!

This is a long over due email which you asked me to write when were discussing about features of Banshee incomparisonwith Clementine music player on OMG! Ubuntu! during the Hackfest. I hope some of these points will actually intrigue Banshee devs work on them. I am a hardware designer and do not code a lot but in my free time I would myself like work on one of these features (which is not likely to happen soon and hence requesting for them)

I know all these feature may not be implemented but still it will be good to discuss and see what we as a community can do!

Banshee is a brilliant music player and has got some really cool features but there are few things which can make it better! (IMO) These are as follows :

1 )Context Pane: One of the most impressive features of Clementine is its context pane. Unlike Banshee which just shows a wikipedia page Clementine has two separate tabs for'song info'and'artist info'.

The'song info'tabs displays 1) last fm song count 2) last fm wiki 3) last fm tags 4) last fm tags (The most important thing here is that clicking on these tags actually gives you an option to play radio based on the tag and not just opens a last fm webpage in a browser like in Banshee) 5) lyrics from around 10s of different sources

The'artist info'shows photos of the artist/band and few cover art in a nice scrollable gallery. Below it is are 'artist tags' (rock , alternative rock , metal) and 'similar artists tags' . Now clicking on each of these tags gives you an option to play either alast.fmstation based on them or playing music from the library. Also all the content from Wikipedia, AOL , myspace and many other source are properly formatted and then shown in the artist info pane rather than just a webpage

2) Two separate panes :The browser pane and music playlist panes are separate. In Banshee when you are browsing music the currently playing playlist is no more visible. To realize the significance consider the case when you are browsing for your music so that you can add it to your playlist but at the same time do not remember if its already there in the playlist or not. Now you don't want to jump between playlist and browser tabs each time , do you ?

3) Built in file browser :This is very important since you do not have to leave your music player. The browser which is present in Banshee is based on song tags (artist , genre , album) but not always you have songs with complete tags. Its better to have both of them.

3) Equalizer :Banshee has no built in equalizer and the plugin based is really not effective. The equalizer which comes with Clementine literally rocks. You have to check this out yourself.

4) Seek bar :On Banshee even if you resize the player window the seek bar for the now playing song wont resize. A bigger seek bar (depending on the size of player window) will help in having greater control on seeking the song instead of having a static small seek bar.

5) 'Love' and 'Ban' buttonscan be used on Banshee even when playing songs from your own library so that next time when you want to listen to songs fromlast.fmradio these songs will logged inlast.fmloved songs too.

More to come soon! (depending on the type of response I get for this one ;) )
