Re: Preferences window

I didn't see it on this list, but such an algorithm would certainly be the optimal solution.

I guess you have to scan the 2003 or even 2002 archives - look for the author "feji", IIRC...

Otherwise you'll select one charset and it will be used for all broken messages. Is there any good reason someone won't have this set to his current locale? Then you could simply make this behaviour the default one and have no question marks to be used at all.

Not necessarily. I've been working at an astronomical institute (and still have friends there), where all machines are (close to heaven!) Sun's, with a US keyboard, and US locale. So the locale-based guess would be US-ASCII. In that environment, you can't even set a system-wide default, as people come from ~50 nations, including e.g. Russia, China and Romania, and of course they all have a different preferred replacement charset. I mention this here as I could convince some people to switch to balse, inter alia as ancient pine could not handle such messages. So, in short, I do not think the locale-based setting is a solution.

However, IIRC the problem is reducing the prefs window for users with an 800x600 screen? I agree that the prefs box is crowded, and options should be removed - but please only where it makes sense! I furthermore think we should not strip thing down until the box fits in 800x600 with some mega- decorated theme and a 36 pt font - if your hardwae is limited, you necessarily face some limitations.

If this is *really* a critical show-stopper, I agree with Pawel that you should try to reduce messages first, e.g. the header

Display of unknown national characters (en)
Darstellung unbekannter nationaler Sonderzeichen (de)

and at the 2nd radio button

use charset (en)
verwende Zeichensatz (de)

which should save plenty of space.

Cheers, Albrecht.
