Yes, both! New style, for consistency of presentation, and
border or framing of some kind as a visual cue to embedding.
How about a separate widget for each part, with the whole message
treated the same way? A vbox for a message, with a header box
and a content vbox, and a vbox containing an arbitrary widget for
each part? We could build it recursively, and pack the whole
thing in the notebook page, putting borders around any message
part. With luck, that construction might make styling a little
simpler.
OK, it's a lot of coding for somebody... ;-)
