best mailbox format?

Hi guys -

what is the mailbox format that balsa has the best accessing algorithms  
for? Ie what is the format balsa reads writes the fastest? I've got  
mailboxes with upwards of 5000 emails, and I would like these to open  
snappily (or as close to as possible..)
