troubles with 2.0.6 on a fresh install, and installing 2.0.11 non-root

so, back after some travels, and my sysadmins installed
RH9 on my desktop, so i thought it would be great to see
the balsa 2.0.x series in action.  hmph.  2.0.6 is the
version we have installed, and it is completely broken
for me.  i have never even been able to get through a
complete session (where it scans the entire contents of
all of my mail directory) without it hanging/freezing.

so, i thought, well, i'll just upgrade to 2.0.11.  but our
sysadmins are a bit busy right now upgrading about 100 other
machines to RH9, so i thought i'd do it myself.  i followed
the instructions from mike harris (see, e.g.,
http://www.rpm.org/hintskinks/buildtree/ ), to do a non-root
rpm build, and sucked over balsa-2.0.11-1.src.rpm from
balsa.gnome.org, and did: 
%rpmbuild --recompile balsa-2.0.11-1.src.rpm

whoops.  doesn't seem to be set up for non-root builds, which
is, i suspect a problem in the rpm files.  anyway, here is
the set of error messages i get at the end - any guidance on
libgcc_s?
