libbalsa_notify_start_check?

A question somewhat related to my recent report on IMAP hangs:
What is the purpose of function libbalsa_notify_start_check()? It doesn't
seem to to anything useful. Actually, it messes up everything pretty bad,
as it will do the check itself, as far as I can tell.
