Can't Open Trash

Greetings:

It never used to do this, but recently when I attempt to delete a 
message I get the following error:
	Couldn't open destination mailbox (Trash) for writing

I have write permissions on ~/mail/trash, but it still won't delete 
mail.  
I'm using Red Hat 7.3 (2.4.18-4) on a i686 system.  I've also seen the 
same message on a Red Hat 7.2 i586 system.  If anybody can offer any 
insight, workaround, fix, (etc...) it would be greatly appreciated,
