Some isp want there clients to authorize so not the whole world is able to 
sent mails (spam...)
But I really don't know what your problem could else be.
Have you already tried my first tip or to reinstall libesmtp?
In the source-distribution of libesmtp there is also a test program, 
perhaps this will help in any way?
