Well, this could not hurt but I think the problem is little bit deeper.
Balsa should not try CRAM-MD5 authentication if the server does not
support it. Also, if the server does not support CRAM-MD5, it should not
advertise it.
The first step is to do run
telnet imap.server.edu 143
and then type
111 CAPABILITY
(send us the server's answer)
and then type
222 LOGOUT
