Fixed. This was actually an error that was undetected for a while because 
gcc did not warn when a function was supposed to return a value but it did 
not. I added -Wreturn-type yesterday to the list of warnings but 
apparently forgot to make clean && make to verify that the code is 
consistent with this flag.
