Other things to look for include:
1) Make sure the /var/spool/mail directory's sticky bit is on (I use chmod
1777). Make sure to check this this again if you've crashed balsa recently.
2) When first checking POP3 mail, if you hit "Check" before you switch to
the Inbox, don't open the inbox until all the new mail has been retrieved.
I start balsa with the "--checkmail" flag, and I always have to remind
myself of that.
