This has been discussed on the mailing list before.

Port 587 is the new standard port for mail submission, see RFC 2476.
>From an MTA perspective submission may have different semantics from
mail relay and a different port number is necessary to allow the server
to know whether the client is submitting or relaying mail.  RFC 2476
describes this in more detail.

No.  The hostname[:port] syntax is fairly common.  The extra entry
complicates the UI and makes it difficult to transition to URL syntax
should one ever be standardised for SMTP.

The real cure for this problem is better documentation :)
