I believe this is the correct approach to handling deprecated features
in *any* library.  When the code is restructured to eliminate the
dependency, the configure.in (configure.ac hint hint) can be updated
to match.  When I'm back from my break, I'll probably update the configure
script to use the libesmtp-config script to check library version numbers
and set compiler flags etc.
