There's no need to have a long UNIX history to use a MTA on a computer. And
this is required for a lot of programs under linux. Cron, per example will
send a mail when problems occur this require a MTA. You can said that cron
is not important but this is wrong and this is only an example. 
With your 'welcome to the desktop' sentence you believe that the desktop
should be like windows. But this is not true. A lot of design choices can
be made and interoperability is important for this. 

You should notice that you can already use multiple Inbox in balsa without
MTA. In fact, procmail can be used from balsa (look at the option in the
ingoing mail preferences dialog box).

This is right that not all users want to edit a procmail config file and I
agree that a GUI would be welcome. 

I agree that the following points need to be in the TODO list (and they are
certainly already) :
* visual alert on incomming mail (as sound and program execution).
* A gui to configure procmail
