I've got some code that does the trick
(updates indexes correctly) but it needs
some cleaning first.

A question: I call my function from
apply_prefs in src/pref-manager.c. It then
goes over all pages of the notebook modifies
the ctree widget for each index. Which
mutex should I lock to protect myself from
other threads? (I haven't yet looked in
detail into the thread synchronization in
balsa, sorry).

BTW, I think in the cleaned version I will
update the size display only in the current
mailbox and others only when they are
focused (for speed reasons). Same for the
date display.
