can't fetch mail

Hi,
	I have the latest version of balsa and I have a problem with
getting my mail.  When I try to fetch mail from anywhere I get a message
that /var/spool/mail/sleepylight/ (or something to that effect) cannot be
locked.  Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it?
