My guess is that the POP thread holds the global mutt lock and balsa will
lock on next IO operation. If this is true, the fix will have to wait for
the next balsa release: I have rewritten the POP code practically from
scratch and it doesn't hold the mutt lock any more (except for short and
predictable time periods).
