Checking a flaky server

I have an @Home email account, and as some of you may be aware, it is not
the most reliable.  When Balsa is checking my Pop account, it frequently
freezes the whole application, and I am forced to kill it. This, I am
pretty sure, is due to the Pop server not responding to the request.  Is
there a way to stop the mail box checking process in balsa while it is
running? Is this a potential bug?
