I don't know if my encoding setting has problem or what else, When I
use evince to open above pdf, I can see quite many corrupted
characters, which I believe they are Chinese.

Emily,  looks like you are using  Foxit PDF Creator to generate PDF
from doc. Please double check if original file is UTF-8 and exported
to UTF-8 as well.
