You are perhaps using RH 7.2. There had been lots of complaints
regarding the idea of droping *.la files from some major packages. My
work around was to hack them manually.

*.la files are plain text files. Open them in a text editor and go on
guessing around. If one doesn't exist (which is very probable),
create it. You may like to consult other *.la files to see how they
are formatted and written.
