Yeah, sorry, I broke that yesterday. Anyway it's fixed in the
python-support branch so just do a

# git checkout -b python-support origin/python-support

For your purpose you should use the python-support branch anyway.

I will fix master later today (basically remove the three lines with
gnome-applet in configure.in).
