Hi Luke,

If you are the maintainer of pulseaudio under ubuntu you can perhaps
make some changes to it:
Is it possible to start pa through init?

No, even upstream recommends against running PulseAudio system wide, unless you are running it on an
specialized/embedded device, and Pulse works much better when run as a per user instance, particularly on
multi-user systems.

In my opinion you can completely drop pulseaudio package but I think this isn't
possible.

No, but as I said, I am going to look at disabling it for accessibility installs.

It is really interesting to see that most of the distributor
are using pulseaudio which makes more trouble than using direct alsa.
Opensuse has allmost the same problems like ubuntu regarding sound configuration.

PulseAudio is still under heavy development. With some developments that are going into PulseAudio now, there
is a chance it may be usable for low latency speech in the future, however things are still very much a
moving target, and there are many issues to fix, not the least with the underlying alsa sound drivers. Speech
is best served with ALSA/dmix currently.
