One thing I do when compiling and installing manually like that is to
script the output of the 'make install'.  That is, run 'script' to
start a shell that captures the output in typescript.  Then do the
'make install' and then close out the script session.  You then have a
log of what files were installed.  Unfortunately, sometimes the
installation isn't logged verry well and is often hard to tell what
actual files got copied.  But most of the time, you get a pretty good
idea.  Also, if the package is decent enough, you should be able to do
a 'make uninstall' and hopefully all installed items will be removed.

It's worth a try.
