changing to Espeak would kind of negate the point of me buying TTSynth
in the first place which was I wanted clear sounding speech that I
didn't have to spend time getting use to.

:-(  Sorry to hear this.  I don't own TTSynth, so I haven't had a chance
to work with it.

Funnily enough, the pproblem is even more compounded when num lock of on.

The NumLock problem is definitely unrelated to the speech engine.  I've
asked Li Yuan to take a look into why we're seeing the odd modifier mask
from the AT-SPI (described in
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2007-August/msg00290.html).
I'm not sure he'll be able to get a fix in for GNOME 2.20, so the
unfortunate workaround is to avoid that nasty NumLock key.

I know other people who use it that have the same issue.
If you want a commercial synth instead of espeak, try Swift.  I don't see
the problem with it.
