Thanks for the suggestion!

It's a good idea but I see messing with uncompressed project files and custom scripts as a last resort.

I'm hoping there is an easier, existing GUI way to insert an image into a cell or that the existing process will be improved.

Just an idea, insert one imageĀ  and save the spreedshet.
Uncompress the spreedsheet(it is a gzip file) and study if you can
arrive to develop a shell/python/perl/whatever script to insert a bunch
of images automagically.
