I will try to build a current Gnumeric CVS this week and get back to

A good place to start before I commit the framework itself would be
a pref dialog for backgrounds (graph, chart, or legend). This is a
nice standalone piece of code that can also be used in several of
the sheet objects. A decent starting point would be the the
background capplet from the control-center.

Desired features
    - preview of result
    - gradient fills from the primary and secondary cardinal points
    - image tiling
    - border width and colour

The majority of this is covered in the background capplet from the
gnome control-center. My hope is that we can widgetify it, make a
few extensions and use result the result in a number of places.
Its a great project due to the low coupling factor.

After a bit of consideration I've decided to focus on 2d graphs and
leave the full magic of 3d until the next iteration. It was very
tempting to do an libcoin (open inventor) based implementation, but
although they are pretty, having good 2d coverage seems more inline
with Gnumeric's philosphies.
