The various schemes have their pro's and cons.  I'm betting that a
non-gnumeric specific decision is the way to go, but I have been to
busy/lazy to make an informed selection.

Isn't libefs created exactly for this?
KDE team uses tar.gz (in koffice) but it has one major disadvantage - after
making a small change in your document you have to write the whole tgz
(together with all embedded objects).
