For what it's worth I spent some time this morning comparing a few of
the more popular registrars from Lifehackers list and I am impressed
with namecheap (also the highest rated in the poll). Free whois
privacy, free 1yr SSL cert, competitive transfer pricing, etc.

Let's see what we hear back from gandi.net on their supporting
projects like GNOME, otherwise my vote goes to namecheap.
