Hi Milan,

Anyway, logout from your window manager, switch to a text console
(Ctrl+Alf+F3), login there, then run this command:
   $ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/evolution/
so I did and - it worked.
A neat, clean installation.

Thank you.
And I promise, I will never ever again follow anything else.

Now, I only failed to reinstall from the 2013 backup.

Calling the tarball in the Menu (File - Restore Evolution Data) tells me
to close Evolution and let the restore change all settings.
Ok.
Then it works some minutes (1,5 GB tarball).
When I restart Evolution, I see - no changes.
No mail, no contacts, no calendar, no changes in settings.

I expanded the archive to a different directory and found
.config 85,7kB Directory
.local 2,2 GB Directory
evolution.dir 100 Bytes unknown

There are several subfolders, and as I usually store mail in subfolders
in mailers, all those subfolders in those subdirectories are
recognizably well known to me. All the mail is there, as I opened some
of the files with cryptical names, which are readable, but no way to
find specific msgs.
Just don't get them into Evolution.

Now, the backup is by 3.6.2, current installation is 3.2.3.
My idea is that the backup of the newer version might not work in the
older one, and I should upgrade on a version 3.6.2 or newer.
Is that correct?

Before messing things up again, I just ask.

Best
