I'm sorry but I don't quite understand the rationale behind this

gedit, Tomboy or whatever editor you like. Type your text, select it

Hi. Yes that does work well but it's awkward and not as
convenient as what I'm suggesting. Here's an example workflow:

   - Select a textarea.
   - activate the "edit in editor" function somehow (context menu,
keyboard shortcut, automatic, etc.). Editor pops up with
     contents of textarea.
   - Edit away
   - Save and quit, textarea has your edits.

   Vs.

   - Run editor.
   - Copy contents of textarea. This can be hassle if there's a lot
     of data to copy.
   - Paste into editor
   - Edit away
   - Delete text from textarea
   - Copy text in your editor
   - Paste text into textarea
   - Quit editor

All-and-all I feel it's a convenience feature for folks who need
to use a lot of web apps.
