reptileqc, I think you're right. What you posted on the Ubuntu forums looks
exactly like what I've experienced. Turns out that it gtkpod fails too, and
this would explain why.

As it is, I have libgpod 0.8.0-3 installed from the Fedora repo, but the
problem seems to be in that version also. I'm hoping that next weeks release
has an updated library and I can manage the shuffle (I discovered it's a 2nd
gen, btw) from my linux box instead of using iTunes on my wife's XP.
