This bug is certainly interesting, you should have to make sure you are
able to catch the keyboard shortcuts in the git plugin somehow.

Sorry, what you found is a very old page. The current GSoc ideas can be

We considered having Vim/Emacs shortcuts but in the end they don't really
fit a desktop applications and are pretty difficult to implement so I am
kind of opposed to that idea.
