I don't know if that is due to my coexisting autoconf 2.5 and 2.13, but 
autoheader 2.13 complains that it wants a 2.5 version of autoconf with or 
without the patch applied... so it seems to me that the autoconf 2.13 
compatibility is already broken. (also note that using autoreconf2.13 on 
pristine source returns error about missing files that the patched version 
doesn't)
Anyway, the patch doesn't break compatibility with automake 1.4.
And for libtool, it is not supposed to break anything, but Murphy's law could 
be hiding out there ;)
