[Shotwell] deleting is really slow

Once I have my photos tagged and titled I like to export them so that I 
can rename them. So I export, run a script that extracts the tags from 
the exif data, renames the file, then I re-import. But before 
re-importing I delete (Shift-Del) the photos in shotwell. But it takes 
ages, even on just a dozen or so images - sometimes I think it's crashed 
as it hangs with an unresponsive screen. Is this a shotwell thing or 
have I got a dodgy database?
