SKCMD also is good for chatting, maybe pidgin is easier if chatting to various people at the same time, but 
is very nice if in one or at least not many 
conversations at once.
With aliases skcmd is a great way to call the folks one most communicates wilth as well, and yes answer 
calls. 
The bitlbee program can work with skyped so you can use skype from your favorite irc client, work,s well with 
irssi for example, but the installation and 
configuration is not trivial for a less experienced computer user.

Note that skype 4.3 still 9orks on Linux, even if it implies some tweaks
to go to conferences, etc. But it mainly works. Used with Qt interface,
but still better if it's inside a set of 2 tools here:
- pidgin-skype to make easier chatting;
- skcmd.py to set a binding to handle calls.
