Unfortunately, I don't use Thunderbird in this fashion, but I think you
can get the behavior you're looking for. I'd play around with the
options in Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Reading and Display. In
particular, I'd experiment with "Open window in" and "Close window on
delete".
