Hi Steve:Thanks for commenting on the bugs. Having the comments there help us keep a history of the discussion around a particular feature in one spot.
I would like to say here that I modified my user-settings.py to only use the KP_Insert key. I now can toggle the insert/overwrite mode with the standard (six pack) insert key.
Excellent. If this provides you with much of what you were looking for, we can open it up to the list to see if people would want to stick with just KP_Insert for the Orca modifier. That is, if everyone is OK with getting rid of the Insert key and going solely with the KP_Insert key as the modifier for the desktop layout, we can quickly do that. That will give us some more time to work out other solutions for handling and customizing the Orca modifier key.
This does bring me to another question though. I would like to add functionality to Orca to speak the word or portion of the status line that shows the insert status when the insert key is pressed. Are there any suggestions as to how I could go about this? I either could map the insert key to speak a part of the screen or somehow get the INS or OVR to dynamically speak whenever the word changes. Are any of these possible? I figured that might be an easy to begin coding some simple enhancements to Orca without bugging you guys to put this feature in. On a similar note, I would like to create a hotkey to speak the current row and column number in gedit. I would think this could be easy enough since the line and column numbers are shown in the status line.
We have an RFE open for "watched objects": http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354466. This RFE would allow users to indicate interest in an object. Once interest has been given, Orca will notify the user of changes to that object.
There may be something you can use now, however. Orca's Where Am I functionality also allows you to get the information in the status bar via a keystroke. In the desktop layout mode, this is done by pressing Orca+KP_Enter twice.

This would allow you to more easily redefine the Orca key to something else. Right now, you can change the Orca modifier key, but it requires hand editing your ~/.orca/user-settings.py or ~/.orca/orca-customizations.py files.2) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373387 - Users should be able to lock/unlock the "Lock" modifier even if Caps Lock is the Orca modifier. While this bug talks about the Caps Lock key, the solution proposed is that a double tap of the key will let the key pass through. Will Steve Holmes wrote:-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: RIPEMD160 After further testing, I conclude that the insert cannot be used nor bypassed with Orca's bypass key. The bypass key passes through for other keys but not the insert key <bummer>. I vaguely recall something about this now that it comes back to me. But I did find another way to turn insert mode on and off though more awkward. I can use the flat review keys to find the "Insert" on the status line and then use the numpad-slash key or left click to toggle the word. Recycling flat review mode will expose the new word. It toggles between Insrt and Over. I did this in Writer; haven't tried this in gedit but am willing to bet this might be the same. Is that because the insert key serves as the "Orca" modifier key? If that be the case, how can we toggle insert mode on and off in such applications as I mentioned above? I know for a fact that the word "INS" on the status lines of these applications never changes when I press the insert key and when typing, I never get into over-write mode. I'm using the desktop standard layout with the latest git pull of Orca from this past weekend.
