Oh ok,
I am using the speech-dispatcher backedn.and am unable to reproduce the
behavior you describe.
With a "locate *" I get huge amounts of output and speech stops when I hit
control and also stops if i end the command with control-c.
P
perhaps the gnome-speech backend behaves differently.

I believe I'm using gnome speech (at least this is the only option that
shows up in the Orca speech preferences).
