Hi Damian,
I think that the best way to update your system is via command line.
Go to gnome-terminal pressing alt+f2 and typing gnome-terminal followed
by the enter key. A prompt will appear and you can type the following
statements:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
