If looking at the bugs below, and if I understood it correctly the problem
comes from the need  to announce the number of items, perhaps a way around
is  (until this bug is fixed if it does) is to scan the rows only up to a
certain limit (say 100) and announce to the user 'Over 100 items' or an
abbreviated version something like '100 plus'; I suspect that in most
situations the actual number of items in a very long list is not that
important; a snappy performance is perhaps more desirable.
For those who need to know the exact number of items in a huge tree, perhaps
a general info shortcut (if not included already) could do the job.

I'm afraid we're already aware of this issue. Sluggishness in tables should
be largely (if not entirely) resolved if we had a reciprocal relationship
for NODE_CHILD_OF. See the following bugs:
