Hi,

I  finally got back to working on getting this machine talking today. Just 
for completeness, here is the problem that resulted in the errors...

The sysadmins set up the system to log in using KDE as the desktop manager 
by default. After a few more floundering attempts to get Orca working, I had 
a sighted colleague look at my machine and he told me that it was using KDE. 
Obviously, switching back to gnome fixed all the problems.
